Why We Are Different

The Pine Box is owned and operated by Chip and Meghan Beresford.
  • Chip Beresford is licensed in Texas and Louisiana as a funeral director and embalmer, and is a certified crematory operator with over ten years of experience in funeral service. He is a former general manager of corporate funeral homes and has witnessed first-hand how funeral costs have risen dramatically over the past several years. While no longer arranging funerals, his goal is to continue to help people at this particularly vulnerable point in their lives.
  • Meghan Beresford also assists families at The Pine Box. Over ten years working side by side with Chip has given her a unique sensitivity to the needs of bereaved families.
  • Peter Gabel is also a licensed funeral director and embalmer with several years of experience in helping families through difficult times. Peter’s knowledge and expertise within funeral service provides families with comfort while also offering quality funeral merchandise.
  • Jim Breihan is a part of The Pine Box family and is dedicated to helping people during a time of loss. Jim strives to offer families the best options available in funeral planning that you won’t always find in a funeral home environment.

The creation of The Pine Box is in response to the Federal Trade Commission's 1994 ruling. It prohibits funeral homes from resisting in any way a family's desire to purchase caskets and other products from alternative suppliers. Funeral homes can no longer require the purchase of merchandise as a requisite for providing death care services. Charging "casket handling fees" or in any manner discouraging a customer from purchasing products elsewhere is illegal.

Our caskets are accepted by all funeral homes, crematories and cemeteries. They are purchased from the same companies that supply funeral homes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will funeral homes accept these products? Yes. The Federal Trade commission requires all funeral homes to accept merchandise that is purchased elsewhere, and they must not charge additional fees for handling this merchandise (FTC Rule, Part 453.4).

Must I deliver the casket to the funeral home? No. The Pine Box can personally deliver a casket anywhere in Texas and delivery is free within 50 miles of Houston. We can also arrange delivery to funeral homes in most areas of the nation.

How much will I save? With The Pine Box, you can save hundreds and in some cases thousands of dollars versus the prices charged by many funeral homes.

How may the products be purchased? Purchases may be made with cash, check, credit card or insurance assignment.

May I purchase a casket before it is needed? Yes. You may purchase a casket in advance of need and store it yourself or you may take advantage of our prepayment plans that freeze the cost of a casket and allow you to pay for it in monthly installments. When the death occurs, The Pine Box will deliver the same model of casket to the funeral home. These plans are approved by the Texas Banking Commission and underwritten by insurance. These plans are the same as those offered by most funeral homes.

What types of caskets are available? The Pine Box offers caskets in a wide variety of styles, colors and materials; including steel, stainless steel, hardwood, copper and bronze. Most major brands, the same that are offered at funeral homes, are available.

Why do some types of caskets cost more than others? Many factors determine the cost of a casket.. The material used in construction, the type of interior, the finish, the hardware used and the craftsmanship employed, all play a role in the price.

What is an outer container? An outer container is a container that the casket is placed in for burial. They can be manufactured in a variety of materials, the most common of which are concrete, steel and composite materials. They are commonly referred to as "vaults" or "liners". The purpose of these containers are to keep the weight of the earth off the casket; to facilitate maintenance of the grave by retarding settling of the grave over time; to offer a measure of additional protection from grave site substances (i.e. water, soil, etc.). In Texas an outer container is not required; however, individual cemeteries may require the use of a container. Each state has its own rules and laws. You should check before you make arrangements.

What other products do you offer? The Pine Box offers caskets, vaults, granite and bronze memorials, cremation urns, flowers and specialty stationary. We also offer our professional experience and expertise.
